SEPTEMBER
Moments captured, audios listened to, and books read in & out of the studio in September 2025.
I worked through some of my overwhelm …
I know that I am a voice among many, many others when I say that I am overwhelmed. We have been in an unprecedented time of collective grief that I am having trouble wrapping my brain and arms around.
In this time we are witnessing a genocide with the help our (United States’) government. We are witnessing the beginning moves in the playbook of facism unfurl through our country. We are seeing people being disappeared, human rights being stripped, and our environment being utterly destroyed for the sake of technology. It is alarming and heavy to hold.
So I turn to art. I turn to creativity. I turn to community and hope and justice and love. I turn to walks with friends, holding sweet newborns, soft kisses before falling asleep, noticing how the leaves are changing colors. I turn to joys both big and small.
These are acts of resistance even when they don’t feel like it.
These are the day-to-day choices that can turn the tides of change even when it feels silly or less than. In this spirit of resistance, two works came out of it (pictured above):
Overwhelm #1, Katie Hatfield, 2025
Overwhelm #2, Katie Hatfield, 2025
In line with my ethos, I used what I had (both yarns and inner knowing) to try to make sense of what I don’t understand. I tried to carve out calm, colorful moments beneath the chaotic surface.
And after throwing myself into creating these works, I still don’t understand why things are happening the way they are. I cannot fathom being a human who takes pride in willingly bringing harm and hate into this world and supporting people in power who do the same.
But what I do know is that we the people outnumber the hateful. We the people do have control (purchasing power ftw!). And we the people can rise together to blockade the few in power trying to dismantle a free and safe nation for all.
May we choose empathy over apathy, resistance over silence, and know that there is abundance, not scarcity.
