A lil' bit about me...

I'm Katie Berman-- the one-woman show behind Katie Berman Textiles!

I received my BFA in Surface Design from East Carolina University where I fell head-over-heels for all things fiber. It was there that I learned to weave and how to manipulate fibers through dyeing and printing. As I continued in my fiber art after college, I found myself wanting a different way of approaching how I handled my studio practice. One that combats textile waste and attempts to source materials well. I wanted to take part in practices that were safer for me as the maker and pursue a process that held more surprises. I now work in the realm of natural dyeing, use punch needle techniques to use up yarn waste and attempt to source my materials in ethical ways— among other things. Though sometimes more challenging, I wouldn’t trade this way of creating for anything.

I find so much joy in creating with fibers and wanted to share that experience and knowledge with others. I now spend most of my creative time making one-of-a-kind wall hangings or teaching various fiber workshops in my local community of Durham, NC. I hope you enjoy what you see and that maybe our paths will cross at an upcoming workshop or through a fun collaboration!

Cheers,
Katie
